Six Steps To Literacy
A Remedial Reading Program That Works

Red Boy Logo An innovative, new approach to remedial reading for grades Five through Nine has been developed and published by Total Reading. Based on an adaptation of the Total Reading multisensory method, it is a complete language arts and reading program and prepares the student for grade level work in English. Six Steps to Literacy has been written especially for the classroom situation, but may also be used by the tutor or reading teacher on a one to one or small group basis.

There are many reasons why certain students do not learn to read with ease in the primary grades. However, generally, Intermediate remedial readers do not respond well to a visual recall method. In most cases they can be taught to read through the kinesthetic/auditory senses if there is no hearing impairment.

Once the left to right sequence is established through multi-sensory phonetic decoding, they can learn to sound the words out almost as fast as by using visual recall.

Speed is not essential in the beginning, and in fact, fast reading should be discouraged, because the remedial reader tends to skip the little words as well as parts of larger words.

Once the Total Reading technique is learned and reading becomes smooth and uninterrupted, wide reading of library trade books increases speed.

The more severe the learning differences, the greater the need for a multi-sensory, sequential approach. In the hands of a trained teacher, students who have not learned to read commonly make a year's progress in six months.

Explicit phonics means straightforward phonetic instruction that teaches he sounds of the alphabet and common two letter sounds and then starts to build simple words for the child to sound and learn. Multi-sensory means that the students "write and say ", using all the learning modalities.                     Mary M. Johnston, Total Reading
