Stories
Home school partents who are using Total Reading are
not fooled (and disappointed) by "Easy to Teach" and inexpensive phonics
materials!
- THEY KNOW:
- • That Total Reading is the
only phonetic decoding reading and language arts program that teaches
the young child to read and enjoy library books, to write creative
stories, and to spell correctly.
- • That word family and alphabet song approaches only
confuse the child who has any kind of reversal problem and
- • That even the brightest children need to be taught
comprehension through the wealth of children's literature now available
to them.
Annie May - Homeschool parent in Tucson,
AZ Total Reading has been very effective in teaching my older
son (12) to spell. I have tried other programs, but they just didn't work.
The advanced dictation lets him "touch" the words. He was able to
visualize the words by using his own fingers. It has given him confidence.
The comprehension approach of integrating reading, writing, comprehension,
and grammar is very appealing. Total Reading also gives me the books that
have the same themes that are being used in the other materials (science,
music, bible, art, etc.) I use. It's fun!
Robert and Tammy Johnston - Homeschool
parents in Tulsa, OK Recently our five year old son, who had
been using Total Reading for only seven months, was tested and scored one
and a half years ahead in reading and comprehension and two years ahead in
vocabulary. We see Total Reading's strongest point as its multisensory
approach, but we also really like the wide variety of literature to choose
from. We are looking forward to the comprehension questions coming out
soon from Total Reading, but we are glad to hear that the older classic
books will still be available. Being Christian home educators, we like
that we have the ability to pick and choose the books that we feel are
appropriate for our children to be reading.
Becky Hill - Homeschool parent and tutor in
Hutto, TX The daily lesson plans are really helpful. There is
no guess work when it comes to planning the day's work. It's all right
there, which saves a lot of time. The marking system is a vast improvement
over the method I was using previous. I have had wonderful results with my
own children, and I have also tutored five other children, grades 1 - 12,
with the same terrific results.
Mary Anne Richard - Homeschool parent and
former first grade teacher in Redding, CA Total Reading lives
up to its name by encompassing reading and writing skills in their
totality. Its hands-on approach to dictation provides for both oral and
visual learners. Its phonetic system arouses children to experience all
the literature available at their level - not just words in a basal
system. I had Total success teaching my forty first graders with this
program, and now as a homeschool mom I consider this the best
reading/writing system to use for teaching my own children.
Deborah O'Connor - Homeschool parent and
Total Reading trainer in Medford, MA Your Total Reading
program is outstanding. My daughters, ages 5 and 7, are both well into
Level III of the first grade, and I intend to continue with the program
throughout their elementary years.
TOTAL READING CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
SUCCESS STORIES
Irene McBride, St. Charles
Primary School, Chippewa Falls, WI They are given the skills
to unlock words, so consequently they feel confidence and success in
reading. Oral vocabulary and comprehension are increased with the Read
Aloud Comprehension aspect of the program. Their writing and spelling
skills are systematically developed and they get a good foundation for
creative writing. Best of all they are motivated and enthusiastic about
reading and writing and they quickly become independent readers.
Linda Kaiser, St. Boniface School, Cold
Spring, MN The children are reading library books. The
phonograms give the children a tool to use to sound out unfamiliar words.
Best of all, this program teaches the children to be creative writers
using descriptive words and phrases.
Christine Winterstein, Trinity Lutheran
School, Aberdeen, SD The children learn how to connect all
the sounds and letters they have learned into words. They learn to sound
out words they run across that they are unfamiliar with. The approach
seems to be one between the phonics approach and the whole language
approach. Creativity is enhanced and learning becomes fun. The best of
all, children are able to explore a whole new world of good quality
literature.
Deborah L. George, St. Cyril School, Tucson,
AZ It combines the phonetic approach to the teaching of
reading with a direction into the general children's literature, a total
language approach.
Steve Gollnick, Christ Church School, San
Rafael, CA It is the most comprehensive phonics reading
program available; the easiest to teach; and the easiest for students to
learn to read properly.
