Before your district or school makes a decision on how best to train your teachers to instruct primary grade children in sequential explicit phonics and basic skills, we urge you to look at Total Reading.
Since 1970 Total Reading has been holding workshops and school inservice to train teachers to use the Total Reading Primary Manual, that has day by day lesson plans for teaching multi-sensory decoding, so that every child in the classroom will be able to read any word and also write and spell correctly.
Total Reading's literature based reading comprehension has particular appeal to Kindergarten and Primary grade teachers who want to implement that aspect of Whole Language. Available are comprehension questions for 4000 Primary books already in school libraries in the areas of Read Aloud (for teachers and parents), Easy to Read, Primary chapter books, and Content Area. Total reading integrates oral and written creativity with children's literature and the social studies/science curriculum.
Over the years Total Reading has helped schools utilize their adopted basal texts in the primary grades by decoding the words and correlating the Total Reading lessons with these series. Total Reading has correlation contracts available for most recent reading series, so that the teachers can use these reading materials already in their classrooms along with the library books.
Total Reading has reading scores from standardized testing dating from 1965 up to the present that show real learner verification. For instance, in a four year longitudinal study in a Sacramento Valley School, these results came from the Reading and Language sections of the CTBS.
Teacher training is accomplished through the Total Reading Association, a nonprofit organization of experienced teacher consultants. They welcome your inquiry for direct district or school inservice.
There is also training for your Intermediate Teachers in Six Steps to Literacy -- a remedial reading program that works. This is the one program that can still make a difference for those of your students who have failed to read at grade level and are now in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade.
Plus, Total Reading has a Spanish Bilingual Program , the purpose of it being to teach children whose primary language is Spanish to read in Spanish, using the Total Reading multi-sensory decoding/comprehension techniques, as a tool for teaching them to read in English.
